A fire that caused significant damage to a home’s exterior in Clinton Township is highlighting a hidden hazard many homeowners may not know about.
Firefighters from the Annandale Hose Company in Clinton Township recently responded to a fire in the southern end of town after a police officer and a volunteer firefighter saw smoke and flames and sprang into action. Fire officials are now warning that improperly discarded painting materials may have contributed to the fire.
“Thanks to their quick thinking and training, 911 was notified, and the fire was extinguished before spreading further into the structure,” the Township of Clinton Division of Fire said on social media. “While the exterior siding sustained significant damage, a potentially much more serious fire was prevented.”
According to fire officials, the exact cause remains under investigation, but crews discovered “improperly discarded” paintbrushes and rags and believe those items may have contributed to the blaze.
“Certain oil-based paints, stains, and wood finishes can spontaneously combust without a spark or open flame. As these products dry, they generate heat that can become trapped in piled-up rags, eventually causing ignition,” officials said.
Firefighters say piling oil-soaked rags together, especially near combustible material, could have dangerous consequences. Taking a few minutes to dispose of them properly could prevent a serious fire.
No injuries were reported.
