Those looking to spend a summer day swimming at High Point State Park may have to find some other activities to enjoy as a lifeguard shortage has caused the state to prohibit swimming for the time being.

According to an alert on the New Jersey Department of Environmental protection website, swimming is currently closed due to a lifeguard shortage.

"Swimming closed. Lifeguards needed. We train and certify," the advisory states.

The DEP website indicates that lifeguards are also being hired for all other swimming areas in the NJ state parks system including island Beach State Park and lakefront swimming areas. The DEP says candidates must pass running and swimming tests prior to being hired, but previous experience as a lifeguard is not necessary.

Lifeguards will receive CPR and AED training as well as certifications for first aid. All lifeguards will also receive a U.S. Lifesaving Association certification. A list of lifeguard test dates is available on the state website.

The DEP has not yet announced when swimming activities will resume at High Point.

The state park is also home to the summit of the Kittatinny Ridge, which is the highest elevation in the state. A monument dedicated to New Jersey veterans sits atop the mountain's summit. High Point is also a popular spot for hiking and camping.
