A Cedar Grove man has been charged with stealing more than $244,000 from a charity that supports disabled adults, where he previously served as treasurer. Stephen Ferguson, 65, served as treasurer of the organization from June 2023 through March 2025, according to police. The nonprofit was established by families of residents at the Association for Hunterdon Developmental Center in Clinton to provide additional support and resources for adults with disabilities living at the state-run facility. An internal audit uncovered Ferguson's alleged actions, determining that he made multiple unauthorized withdrawals from the organization's account for his personal use, authorities said. "This case alleges a serious breach of trust involving funds intended to support vulnerable members of our community," Hunterdon County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said. "Thefts from organizations such as this are akin to direct assaults against the disabled population and, as such, are extremely important to this office." Ferguson is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday and will be represented by a private attorney, according to court records.
