New Jersey ranks ninth nationally for unwanted call complaints, study finds
New Jersey residents filed more than 472,000 complaints about unwanted phone calls over five years, ranking ninth in the nation per capita, according to a new analysis of federal data.
The study, conducted by SMS verification provider SMSPool, examined Federal Trade Commission complaint records from October 2020 through September 2025.
New Jersey recorded 472,254 complaints during that period, or about 4,946 per 100,000 residents.
Complaints increased 41.6% in fiscal year 2025, rising from 57,937 the previous year to 82,038. However, the latest total remained 51.4% below the 168,963 complaints recorded in fiscal year 2021.
Delaware had the highest complaint rate nationwide, followed by Ohio and Arizona. North Dakota had the lowest rate.
The analysis used data from the FTC's National Do Not Call Registry and U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.
The FTC cautions that its figures reflect unverified consumer complaints rather than the total number of unwanted calls received.
