78-year-old Mays Landing woman sentenced to 30 years in prison for partner’s murder
A 78-year-old Atlantic County woman has been sentenced to 30 years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the 2024 murder of her elderly domestic partner inside their home.
Eileen Bright, of Mays Landing, was sentenced Tuesday, Oct. 27, by a New Jersey Superior Court judge following her conviction last month in the death of 81-year-old Gary Johnson, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
A jury found Bright guilty on Sept. 22 of first-degree murder, two counts of fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and two counts of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The weapons charges were merged into the murder count for an aggregate 30-year sentence.
The conviction stems from an emergency response on March 31, 2024, at approximately 5:39 p.m., when Hamilton Township police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a deceased male at a residence on Lewis Drive in Mays Landing.
Upon arrival, officers located Johnson inside the home suffering from multiple severe wounds to his head and body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Trial evidence revealed that Bright used a household statue and a kitchen knife to attack and kill Johnson. During the trial, the jury rejected Bright's defense of not guilty by reason of insanity.
Under the terms of her sentence, Bright must serve the full 30 years before becoming eligible for parole release.
