A motor scooter driver was killed and a passenger was critically injured in a crash Wednesday night in Elizabeth, officials said.

The crash happened around 9:24 p.m. on Newark Avenue near the Walgreens parking lot and involved a motor scooter and a Hyundai, according to city officials.

A preliminary investigation found the Hyundai was attempting to turn into the parking lot as the motor scooter was traveling south on Newark Avenue when the collision happened.

The scooter operator was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. A passenger on the scooter suffered severe injuries and was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

Officials said the Hyundai driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
