A 19-year-old Clayton woman was killed Sunday night in a two-vehicle crash at a Gloucester County intersection, authorities said.
Clayton Police Department officers responded to a crash around 9:50 p.m. at the intersection of East Academy Street and Fries Mill Road, according to police.
A preliminary investigation found that one of the vehicles was traveling north on Fries Mill Road and attempted to make a left turn, entering the path of a second vehicle traveling south, causing the collision, police said.
When officers arrived, they found one vehicle overturned with three people trapped inside. Emergency responders were able to get the victims out of the vehicle and treated them for their injuries, officials said.
The 19-year-old woman was taken to a hospital where she later died from her injuries, police say.
Clayton Public Schools superintendent Nikolaos C. Koutsogiannis identified the woman as Zara Zaman, a former district student.
"Our hearts are with Zara’s family and friends during this unimaginable time," Koutsogiannis wrote.
The superintendent also said that in addition to Zaman, four other members of the Clayton school community - two current and two former students - were injured in the crash.
"This is an incredibly difficult moment for our community. The loss of a young life is always tragic, and news like this can be especially hard for students, staff, and families to process," he wrote.
The crash remains under investigation.
