One person is dead following a fatal shooting in Newark's West Ward on Thursday afternoon, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The scene was near Littleton Avenue and South Orange Avenue, outside The Best Food Market. A News 12 crew at the scene observed 13 evidence markers near what appeared to be bullet casings outside the store.

Newark police and Essex County sheriff's officers were at the scene. Traffic was backed up in the area as authorities investigated.

Officials say that the shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. They say the victim was an adult male who was pronounced dead at University Hospital a little after 3 p.m. The victim's name was not immediately released.
