While a lot of the focus is on the Winter Olympics in Milan, one Warren County athlete is training for a major competition of her own.
Ashly Conover is set to represent Team New Jersey in bowling at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games this summer.
Conover was diagnosed with autism at 12 years old. Her family said she struggled for years with socializing and making friends and tried several sports before returning to a family pastime.
“I started bowling when I was a kid. We went bowling with family,” Conover said.
About four years ago, she joined The Arc of Warren County’s bowling team. Through the program, she earned a spot on the Special Olympics roster for Team New Jersey.
While the wins and titles matter, Conover said bowling has given her something more meaningful. “Making friends,” she said.
For her family, the impact has extended far beyond the lanes.
“We’re obviously proud of her for what she’s accomplished with the sport. But we’re proud of her for what she’s done socially, because that’s a big deal for her to have those connections,” said Conover’s sister, Kayla Conklin.
Conover said the sport has helped her grow more confident and step outside her comfort zone.
“I made other friends who I love dearly, and it actually, I’ve actually got more out of my shell,” she said.
