Passaic officials are considering new safety measures along the Passaic River following the drowning deaths of two children last week.

Mayor Hector Lora said the city is reviewing ways to improve safety along the river, where officials have recorded seven water-related incidents since 2016.

Among the ideas being discussed are additional warning signs, increased patrols and public education about water safety.

“We have to explore every opportunity. So, if there’s additional signage that we need to put up, if there’s additional patrols that can be done—one of the suggestions, and it actually came from someone on social media, is we should implement an educational component to grammar school curriculums to teach individuals about safety around rivers and water,” Lora said.

The mayor noted that after a man jumped into the river in 2020, he proposed placing life preservers near bridges and other waterways, but the idea was never implemented.

The city is now revisiting safety measures following the deaths of Michael Klenk and Milian Dula.

Lora said he is calling for a meeting with local, county and state officials to discuss measures that can be implemented to improve safety along the river and help prevent future tragedies.
