Following severe flash flooding in late summer, areas of North Jersey are preparing for the possibility of another round of high water this weekend.

One of those areas where borough officials are keeping a close eye on rain totals is Hawthorne. Along Lafayette Avenue, the main stretch of town, some people are piling up sandbags to keep flood water from creeping inside businesses this weekend.

Hawthorne's mayor says storm drains have been cleared and barricades are at the ready in case roads need to be closed. Police, fire and E-M-S are on standby. Hawthorne is prepping to avoid another round of flooding like it experienced in late July.

“I hate to say it, but I’m anticipating some flooding. We’re going to tell everybody to stay off the streets. You don’t have to go sightseeing and seeing, 'where is the flooding?' and 'what does the brook look like?'" said Mayor John Lane.

Lane has canceled the borough’s annual Hawthorne Day event on Saturday due to strong winds being forecast.

"I don’t want anyone getting hurt because we have a lot of tents put up. The wind can just sometimes pick up the anchors out of the ground," said Lane.
