Municipal officials in Lawrence Township are urging residents to take precautions after a young black bear was reported rummaging through household trash in a neighborhood.
The incident occurred near Tall Timbers Drive and Carter Road, according to a notice posted by township officials.
Authorities noted that bears are currently exhibiting increased activity across New Jersey as they forage for extra food ahead of the winter months.
Township officials emphasized that if a bear is passing through a residential area without posing an immediate threat, residents should leave it alone and give it ample space. Approaching or feeding a bear, or getting close to take photos or videos, is strongly discouraged.
To discourage bears from entering residential yards, municipal authorities recommend several key prevention steps:
- Store household trash inside a garage, shed or bear-resistant container.
- Put garbage cans out on the morning of scheduled pickup rather than leaving them outside overnight.
- Rinse trash cans regularly, clean outdoor grills after each use and bring in all outdoor pet food.
- Take down backyard bird feeders, which are a major attraction for foraging wildlife.
If residents encounter a bear on their property or nearby, officials advise staying calm and avoiding the urge to run.
Instead, speak in a firm voice or make loud noises to make the bear aware of your presence. Back away slowly while ensuring the bear has an unobstructed path to leave the area, and immediately bring children and pets indoors.
State officials remind the public that intentionally feeding bears is illegal in New Jersey.
