Haunted tours return to 200-year-old Burlington County prison for Halloween
A former New Jersey jail dating to 1811 is bringing back haunted tours for Halloween, complete with ghost stories, costumed actors and special effects.
The Historic Burlington County Prison Museum, located at 128 High St. in Mount Holly, will host "The Haunting on High Street" on Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31, from 7 to 10 p.m.
The ticketed tours will feature actors portraying ghosts and other frightening characters. Visitors can also attend an after-party in the prison yard featuring ghost stories, face painting, tarot card readings, games, music and food vendors.
Tickets are available at hauntingonhighstreet.com. Admission to the after-party is included with tour tickets, while separate tickets are available for those who only want to attend the festivities.
The prison operated from 1811 to 1965 and was once the oldest continuously used jail in America, according to Burlington County. The building now serves as a museum documenting the history of the prison and those who lived and worked there.
The site has also attracted paranormal investigators, including the television series "Ghost Hunters," because of stories of unexplained activity inside the former jail.
Proceeds from the haunted tours will benefit the Historic Burlington County Prison Museum Association, a nonprofit group that helps preserve and operate the museum.
The museum's regular hours are Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
