Crews battled flames and icy conditions in Bergenfield early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out at a home on Roosevelt Avenue.
Firefighters began arriving around 5 a.m., calling for mutual aid as smoke poured from the windows. Fire trucks lined the street as crews worked to put out flames in the two‑and‑a‑half‑story house.
Fire Chief Ryan Zadrozna said the home filled with smoke quickly before becoming fully involved. He said crews initially entered the house before shifting to a defensive attack.
Zadrozna said cooperation from neighboring departments helped prevent the fire from spreading and added that working smoke alarms helped those inside get out safely.
Fire departments from Dumont, Teaneck, Englewood and Tenafly responded to assist.
Drone video showed extensive damage to the home.
No firefighters were injured. How the fire started remains under investigation.
