A 56-year-old Newark man has died following a two-car crash early Sunday morning.

Authorities say it happened around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of McCarter Highway and South Street in Newark.

Emergency crews responded to reports of a serious accident involving two vehicles.

One of the drivers, identified as Alberto Coutinho, was taken to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials say the other driver was also hospitalized but is expected to recover.

It was not immediately clear what led to the crash.
