A dead whale found in Newark Bay on April 9 has been moved to Jones Beach for a necropsy after a break in the marine forecast created a window for safe operations, according to an update from response teams.
Officials said favorable winds and seas allowed the whale to be towed from New York Harbor to shore at Jones Beach. The Long Island beach was selected due to its access to heavy equipment and other resources needed for the exam, as well as a suitable burial site afterward, officials said in a social media post.
Teams from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center and the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society were at the scene Thursday conducting the necropsy, which was expected to take several hours.
Officials said the teams were not expected to be finished until late Thursday night, and a final update would be released Friday by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.
