A driver crashed into a high-pressure gas line, forcing surrounding homes to be evacuated Friday morning in Closter.
Police say the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. near Piermont Road and Chestnut Avenue.
Heavy fog engulfed the area as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Homes were cleared by personnel while PSE&G worked to secure the gas line.
The nearby Senior Citizens Center was used as a temporary shelter.
Officials say the leak was controlled by 7:45 a.m. and there is no longer any risk to public safety.
