A Phillipsburg motorist is facing a possible summons after allegedly ignoring a stopped school bus with its red warning lights flashing and stop arm extended last week.
According to the Phillipsburg Police Department, the driver showed no signs of slowing down or stopping and continued past the school bus despite the activated safety signals. New Jersey laws require motorists to stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, a measure designed to protect children as they enter or exit the vehicle.
Police posted a video of the incident on social media as the latest installment in the department's "Bus Stop Busted" series, which depicts similar violations by drivers. Police officials used the recent video as a reminder that school bus safety laws exist to prevent tragedies and depend on drivers remaining alert and attentive.
Officials confirmed that enforcement action is underway, and the driver can expect to receive a summons related to the violation.
"A reminder to drivers: when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, you must stop," police said. "Our students’ safety depends on everyone paying attention and following the law. This driver kept on rolling. The summons will be catching up."
