Monmouth County's America 250 celebrations got off to a festive start Friday night, but the event ended abruptly as severe weather moved into the area.

Hundreds gathered in Union Beach for the Fourth of July American Birthday Bash before dark clouds, heavy rain and strong winds forced attendees to seek shelter.

As conditions deteriorated, high winds kicked up sand from the beach and sent debris flying through the air.

Businesses along the waterfront, like Jakeabob's, scrambled to adjust as the weather moved in.

"When asked about the restaurant's contingency plan for rain, Jake Dorr said, "We have to start running around like this. I think I have to go right now," before rushing off to prepare for the storm.

Many customers, though, were eager to keep the fun going.

"Jakeabob's, we had a reservation for eight, and we're like, wait, wait, wait, why is it all dark?" said Callie Calligy of Monmouth County. "The people were telling us that it was gonna like, maybe rain, and all of a sudden something comes flying at us, and they're like, leave, leave, and I'm like oh my God."

It's not yet clear whether any of the canceled festivities will be rescheduled.
