A stretch of Interstate 80 in North Jersey saw eight crashes in 24 hours over the weekend, according to the Allamuchy Fire Department.
The crashes were clustered in the area near Exit 19, about 20 minutes from the Pennsylvania border. The area is heavily traveled.
The fire department first reported a crash Sunday involving two tractor-trailers and a car on I-80 westbound near mile marker 21. Trash was scattered along the side of the road. The department said crews had already responded to four calls by that point. After midnight, they say the number had doubled to eight with another major crash.
State police say that crash happened just before 12:30 a.m. near mile marker 22.2 eastbound. What appeared to be lettuce spilled onto the roadway. Some lanes stayed closed into the morning while crews repaired the guardrail.
Rain was heavy on Sunday, but drivers who spoke with News 12 said they weren’t surprised by the number of crashes. They pointed to speeding and a lack of awareness of other drivers’ speeds as major problems on this part of the highway.
“I travel to I-80 a lot, and the amount of cars that I see speeding, it’s a lot,” said I-80 driver Prince. “If we have more law enforcement, the speeding would definitely come to a halt,” one said.
Another driver, Gabriel Pastrana, said a lot of people aren’t using the left lane for passing.
“Everybody’s in the left lane and it causes people to start swerving and merging over,” he said. “Everybody’s cutting everybody off.”
