A person was killed early Monday morning during an incident involving officers from the Lacey Township Police Department, officials confirmed.
According to Chief Paul J. Sullivan Jr., the police encounter occurred at about 2 a.m. in the area of Hemlock Drive, in the Lanoka Harbor section of the municipality.
"This encounter resulted in one individual sustaining a fatal injury," Sullivan told News 12 in a statement.
During the incident, one Lacey Township police officer suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The chief said there were multiple police officers on scene; however, none of them were injured during the encounter.
"As the safety and well-being of our community remains our top priority, I can assure you that there is no active or ongoing threat to the public," Sullivan said. "The scene has been secured by law enforcement, and we ask that everyone avoid the area if possible."
The chief did not elaborate on the nature of the incident or provide any details on the victim. The NJ Attorney General is continuing the investigation.
