An alert about heart health is focusing attention on triglycerides and why doctors say keeping track of them is so important.
Triglycerides are molecules the body absorbs from food and stores for energy.
Doctors say having too many triglycerides can contribute to heart disease and other medical problems.
Experts say levels can often be lowered through lifestyle changes.
Those changes include avoiding alcohol and processed foods, eating fruits and vegetables, and exercising regularly.
Doctors also say support from friends and family can make a significant difference.
“If someone’s trying to be active, having a friend or family member to do that with keeps them honest,” said Dr. Jay Chudow, a cardiologist at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care. “Actually saying, ‘On Tuesday, let’s go for a walk,’ and then really doing it.”
Patients say small steps can add up over time.
“It’s a journey, so you have to start at the beginning and just take it one step at a time,” said Mark Cohen.
Doctors also note genetics can play a role in triglyceride levels.
They recommend seeing a doctor and getting levels tested at least once a year.
