In the time it takes you to grab a cup of coffee or send a few quick texts, you could become the latest victim of a crime. And if it happens at night, you may not even know until it's too late.
A family in Gloucester Township learned the hard way why taking a few seconds to secure your vehicle at night could save you from car thieves.
A video posted by the Gloucester Township Police Department shows a group of five suspects pulling up to a house on a rainy night on Sept. 28, just after midnight. They all get out of the car and run to the driveway, where three vehicles are parked. Police said the doors of all three vehicles were left unlocked.
"They steal a credit card from one vehicle, which they later attempted to utilize in Sicklerville and Glassboro," police said. "They attempted to start the white vehicle on the right, but the key FOB was not with it. The black SUV on the left did have the key FOB, so they were able to start and steal the vehicle by driving it across the lawn."
Fortunately, the stolen car had a tracking system and was later located by police in Philadelphia.
"This entire incident took place in two minutes and thirty seconds," Gloucester Township police said. "The good news is our Gloucester Township Police Detectives have developed suspects in this crime, but it’s an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time."
According to police, the video "wasn't created to embarrass the victims" of the crime, but to show the public "how quickly these young criminals are committing these crimes." Police say they almost always arrive in stolen vehicles and then start checking door handles for unlocked cars. They'll also steal valuables and try to start the cars to determine if the key fob was left inside. Then, police said, they'll often use the cars in other crimes and dump them later in another town.
Police continue to urge drivers to take steps every night to secure their vehicles by removing valuables and key fobs and locking the car doors.
