While the FIFA World Cup has brought thousands of visitors to New Jersey this summer, some businesses near the New York/New Jersey Stadium say they have yet to see a boost in customers.
Gianna's Restaurant and Lounge, located about a four-minute drive from the stadium, has remained quiet during match days, according to staff.
"I think it has to do with no one is allowed to bring cars, people don't drive, so they have no way to get here. Lunch, stay home if you can work from home, a lot of variables. It just hasn't been working. Nothing has been happening," said Joanne Kreeger, manager of Gianna's Restaurant and Lounge.
Kreeger said many local restaurants anticipated an influx of customers during World Cup matches and printed promotional advertisements to distribute at nearby hotels.
However, she said local hotels have told restaurant staff they are not fully booked, leading some businesses to believe the lack of visitors extends beyond restaurants.
