A long closure ends this afternoon as the Route 71 bridge connecting Belmar to Avon-by-the-Sea is reopening in time for spring and the rescheduled Belmar St. Patrick's Day Parade.
DOT officials say the 94‑year‑old drawbridge, which crosses the Shark River, had parts replaced on the south bridge leaf.
Crews secured the bridge in the open position during the work to allow maritime traffic to pass.
The closure affected both vehicle and pedestrian traffic and impacted nearby businesses.
The reopening will also assist paradegoers when the Belmar St. Patrick's Day Parade takes place on March 28 after being postponed due to snow. A shuttle bus for pedestrians will continue running through this weekend.
