Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Old Bridge, health officials say
A raccoon found in Old Bridge has tested positive for rabies, marking the fifth reported rabid animal in Middlesex County this year, health officials announced Wednesday.
The raccoon was discovered Oct. 25 in a resident's yard near West Greystone Road and Old Bridge-Englishtown Road, according to the Middlesex County Office of Health Services.
Officials said the animal appeared lethargic and was collected by animal control. It was sent to the New Jersey Department of Health laboratory for testing, with a positive rabies result reported Wednesday.
No people or animals were exposed to the raccoon, according to county officials.
The case is the first reported rabid animal in Old Bridge this year.
Health officials are urging residents to avoid contact with wild animals, report animals displaying unusual behavior to local police or animal control, and keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations.
Signs of unusual behavior can include excessive drooling, aggression, difficulty moving or appearing unusually tame.
Anyone bitten by a wild or domestic animal should wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, immediately report the bite to their local health department and consult a physician as soon as possible.
Residents seeking additional information can contact the Middlesex County Office of Health Services.
