Pemberton Borough police have completed the first installation through a new program designed to give emergency responders quicker access to the homes of residents who may be unable to open the door.

The department's Emergency Residential Lockbox Program, which took effect Aug. 3, is free and voluntary. Police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel can use a secure exterior lockbox containing a house key during an emergency, reducing the potential need for forced entry.

The program is available to seniors who live alone or spend significant time alone, people with medical conditions or disabilities that may prevent them from answering the door, and other residents approved by the police department based on individual circumstances.

The department said the lockbox will only be accessed by emergency responders during a legitimate emergency. There is no cost to eligible participants.

Residents interested in the program can schedule an appointment with the Pemberton Borough Police Department to obtain an application and determine eligibility.
