Police have released body camera footage showing a deadly gunfight between Rhode Island police officers and a man suspected of stealing a luxury sailboat from a Jersey City marina.

The 40-foot sailboat was reported stolen from Liberty Harbor Marina on Aug. 22. Days later, authorities located a vessel believed to be the same boat in Newport, Rhode Island.

Body camera footage released by the Newport Police Department shows officers approaching the vessel. They can be heard ordering the man on board to show his hands. Instead, the individual runs into the boat's cabin.

As officers board the boat, a gunshot can be heard. The video captures officers announcing that shots had been fired as they exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

During the confrontation, one officer reported being struck by gunfire. Police later said the officer was shot in the leg and received treatment for his injuries.

Officers can be seen on video entering the boat's cabin, where they said they found a man with a gun who was suffering from a significant head injury.

Authorities identified the man as 27-year-old Brendan Norris. Norris died from his injury, according to police.
