Long Branch police will enforce a Halloween curfew for children under 17 on Oct. 29, 30 and 31.
The curfew runs from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night, according to a notice from the city's Department of Public Safety.
The notice says the mayor has directed Public Safety Director Jorge Silverio to strictly enforce the curfew.
The city previously imposed an emergency curfew in May after hundreds of young people gathered at Pier Village for a pop-up party. Fights broke out, people jumped on cars and six people were arrested.
While the "Halloweekend" curfew is not new, some residents say they were glad to hear it was being strictly enforced, although felt it was unfortunate for the kids.
“People have always come down to Long Branch, Asbury Park, the other beaches around here, and kind of went a little too crazy. So it makes sense that they're going to put a curfew. It's just, I feel bad for the local youths that have to now be strictly guarded,” said Aidan Wilson.
Police also encouraged families to take precautions while trick-or-treating, including traveling in groups, wearing bright costumes, carrying flashlights and using crosswalks.
Children were also advised not to enter homes while trick-or-treating and to have a parent check candy before eating it.
