Ice buildup on the Hudson River caused problems for ferry riders heading into New York City, forcing service changes along the busy commuter route.
New York Waterway says two major ferry terminals were closed Tuesday morning due to continued ice flow on the river.
The Edgewater terminal and the Liberty Harbor terminal were both shut down as crews monitor conditions.
The Port Imperial terminal in Weehawken remained open, though officials say ferry navigation remains challenging. New York Waterway bused ferry riders to the Weehawken terminal on Tuesday.
Even with slightly warmer temperatures, officials say ice buildup has not eased, making operations difficult for both commuters and ferry crews traveling to and from Manhattan. Since it doesn't appear that warming temperatures are coming anytime soon, further adjustments will be necessary moving forward.
New York Waterway says in a statement,
As always, our first priority is the safety of our passengers and crews. We have temporarily suspended our NY Waterway Edgewater and Liberty Harbor ferries as the ice buildup has made it difficult to properly service those terminals and adhere to the transit schedule.
Our substitute bus service can provide more accurate transit times for our Edgewater customers.
We anticipate that with the warmer weather, Liberty Harbor will reopen in the following days.
All our other terminals and routes are operating, incorporating any service changes when needed with immediate communication to our customers. We will continue to assess the conditions on the Hudson and keep our riders updated on the status of our ferries and terminals. The latest service alerts can be found on our social media channels, the NY Waterway App, and via our NY Waterway text alerts.
