A firefighter was injured and a family escaped a house fire overnight at a home on Prospect Street in South Orange.
The homeowner said all four people inside, along with a pet, was able to get out safely thanks to working smoke alarms.
Much of the fire damage was concentrated in the back of the home, but smoke and flames gutted the interior.
The South Orange fire chief says the flames are believed to have started in the basement, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
One firefighter was taken to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center for treatment of minor burns and is expected to be OK.
The Red Cross is on scene assisting the family.
