A 22-year-old Union City man was killed in a crash involving a sanitation truck and an electric scooter early Wednesday morning, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities say the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. on Bergen Turnpike. Responding officers found the operator of the electric scooter, later identified as Mauricio Rodriguez, suffering from serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The truck was labeled “Rivoca,” a commercial waste and recycling company that operates a sorting facility in Clifton. Part of Bergen Turnpike near 37th Street was closed during the investigation, but the roadway has since reopened.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Union City Police Department are investigating the fatal crash. No additional information has been released.
