Clifton man arrested after pursuit in allegedly stolen vehicle, police say
A Clifton man was arrested after allegedly fleeing police in a vehicle reported stolen from Paterson before crashing and trying to run away, authorities said.
Clifton police said officers were patrolling near Main and Crooks avenues at about 7:09 p.m. Monday when they spotted a 2023 Honda Accord parked at a nearby business. A license plate check showed the vehicle had been reported stolen from Paterson, police said.
When officers attempted a motor vehicle stop, the driver fled along Crooks Avenue toward Hazel Street, according to police.
Authorities said the Honda sustained a flat tire within a minute of the pursuit but continued at low speeds through several streets in the South Paterson neighborhood, eventually losing the tire completely and becoming disabled near Gould Avenue and Pacific Street in Paterson.
Police identified the driver as Gaudencio Herrera, 28, of Clifton. Authorities said Herrera ran from the vehicle but was quickly apprehended.
Herrera was turned over to the Passaic County Sheriff's Office Corrections Hub pending his initial court appearance. He is charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, resisting arrest by flight and eluding.
