Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim announced that he will be pushing United Illuminating to put new power lines underground.
The announcement comes as The Connecticut Siting Council voted against the project to put overhead power lines from Bridgeport to Southport.
"This is a great ruling because it stands up for the residents, the citizens of Bridgeport & Fairfield against these monopoles," said Ganim. "It defends our property rights and says to the UI company, 'You have to take into consideration the rights of the residents. You can't just plop these huge monopoles in everyone's backyard'."
Ganim says the seven-mile project would go on the north side of the railroad tracks with the power lines underground.
