FORECAST:
Bitter cold settles into New Jersey with morning temperatures in the teens and feel like temperatures in the single digits.
This level of cold is hazardous, so it’s important to dress warmly if planning to spend periods of time outside, either waiting for transportation or walking. Covering skin will help reduce impacts of the wind chill, which is where gusts of 25-35 mph today blow away body heat, causing cold-weather illnesses like hypothermia or frostbite.
Afternoon temperatures remain in the 20s, with highs only near 28 degrees. There will not be much melting of the snow or ice today as a result, even with the sunshine.
A process called sublimation will take place instead, which is like melting but without the liquid. The ice/snow goes from a solid to a gas immediately due to the energy received by the sun, which can reduce some of the ice/snow, but not a lot of it. Please watch your step throughout the day today.
Tomorrow's temperatures will be closer to the freezing mark, but still lingering just below or at 32 degrees. The sky will feature sun and clouds.
Temperatures won't rebound until Wednesday afternoon where it approaches 40 degrees under a mostly sunny sky. The wind will be calmer.
Thursday's temperatures will be near 50 degrees, but midday sun gives way to late clouds as a front approaches to deliver rain into Friday morning.
Friday morning's rain will likely be heavy and downpours can wash away a lot of the snow.
