Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III is asking the NYNJ FIFA World Cup Host Committee to create an affordable ticket access program for county residents.
Tedesco sent a formal letter Friday to Host Committee CEO Alex Lasry, citing a recently announced subsidized ticket initiative for New York City residents. He urged the committee to create a similar program for Bergen County, which will host eight matches at MetLife Stadium, including the final.
“Bergen County residents will experience the day-to-day impacts of hosting this tournament more directly than perhaps any other community in the region,” Tedesco wrote. “For that reason, I believe it is important that Bergen County residents also have a meaningful opportunity to share in this historic experience.”
Tedesco said Bergen County municipalities, first responders, transportation workers, businesses and residents will play a major role in supporting tournament operations and regional logistics during the World Cup.
He also said residents will deal with increased traffic, strained roads and heightened public safety demands tied to hosting one of the world’s largest sporting events.
